Bangladesh And Branding of Bangladesh

Yesterday, i was watching a TV show in NTV, the program is basically a closed discussion among three participants. The topic of the discussion was very interesting and perhaps, if i am not totally wrong, is the most discussed topic among our people, Branding of Bangladesh.

As i was watching the program from the middle, i could not mention anything detail about the participants. So far i understand, three people are from three different groups. One of them is Chief of Communication of GP, Rubaba Uddola; the other one was from, my guess, advertising world and the third participants was a foreigner, probably from related field.

At the time i was watching, the program created some sort of wave in my mind. And till now, those waves are existing in my mind. This blog is the ultimate result of that thing. I was also very curious about Bangladesh Brand Forum, as they perform some programs in our country. Their program to identify the best brand in Bangladesh was the point when i decided, i need to know something about this. But whenever i have asked someone, they share their views due to not having the basic concept. But yesterday's TV show gave some of my question regarding this topic. Whenever i learned something, i feel i need to share with others, their may be someone who wants to know about the thing just like me. So i am sharing my knowledge, so far i have learned, regarding BRANDING of BANGLADESH.

From the overall discussion i understood, yet we as Bangladesh don't have a Brand image to outer world. Because, throughout the discussion, all the participants were trying to visualize the importance of this to the audiences. I enjoyed their discussion a lot as they are much more professional experts rather than intellectual persons. They discuss in brief, show their reasoning and explains the basics.

now, i think we all have some idea about branding and brand. Some of us may have very detailed and updated idea about branding and its value. As i like very simple way to understand everything, i like to view branding as a personality that attached with the particular thing, whenever we think about that particular then the attached personality traits come at top of our mind. Like, if we think about BATA Shoe then we have some idea in our mind that the shoe will have high life expectancy. When we think about NOKIA then we think about easy menu option or software of NOKIA. Now, all these are nothing but the brand image of those products that we have in our mind. All companies work hard to establish their separate and positive brand value of their product.

Now comes the topic of Branding for Bangladesh. Like everything else, countries can also have some brand image in the mind of others. Whenever we heard about America, we saw the picture of power and strength that are attached with America. Whenever we heard about Japan, then we visualize their leadership in technology. Whenever we heard about Dubai, we think that country as a destination place for tourists. So these are the brand images of this country. And these images were not created by one day. A long, detailed and consistent approach is needed to establish such brand images for countries. We, as a developing country, also need an image which people from other country will visualize when we talk with them or doing business with them. For example, if we prepared a brand image of low production cost, then whenever we will doing business with other countries, then they will think about the low cost production capability of our country. This will give them some idea about our country.

As this will give the identity for our country, we need to have follow some consistent and long term approach to establish our own image. All the participants of the discussion mentioned the same thing with different logic. As i have some shortage of time, i will mention the key points of that discussion in below:
  • Bangladesh has very high opportunity to establish its brand image very easily as nothing farm is established yet.
  • We need to utilize our strengths to establish the brand image. But their are some examples where people use their weakness in a positive way to establish their image. Like the recently independent country East-Timor has no infrastructure at all in their country. They place this in an ad mentioning the invitation see the nature with out any artificiality.
  • We should follow a consistent and coherent strategy to build the image.
  • Government bodies need to play the major role in establishing the brand image when different corporate bodies and individual people will also contributed to build the image.
  • The image that we want to establish, need to come from our inside.
  • Individual people are the building blocks of this process.
As these points are self-explaining and very simple in nature, i am not elaborating these anymore. Hope you will understand by yourself.

No more writhing in this topic. Due to the electricity problem, i need to do the same work 5 times before publishing the post. Its so sad that we have lots of negative thing about our country but very few positive things (in reality) to discuss.
