The Managers are Dead, Long Live Coach
We are habituated with the fact, senior executives/managers, holding higher position in the hierarchy, will direct his/her sub-ordinate to complete their tasks so that at the end of the day, they will complete their jobs in the way. The senior managers engaged more in directing task rather than anything else. At the beginning of the day, they instruct their sub-ordinates, which task they need to complete. They again evaluate the tasks, completed by the sub-ordinates. During the whole day, they basically busy to manage their sub-ordinates, to direct their sub-ordinates. Senior managers play the role of director to a larger extent.
In today's corporate world, however, their is a wind of change. And the change is in the role of senior managers in organizational hierarchy. Now a days, the managers need to play much more of Coaches than the previous role of Directing.
In previous style of management, the senior managers hold a very critical position in the organization, have much more access to the information sources of the company, much more engaged in direction rather than anything, the front-line officers are all focused to comply with their bosses instructions. As the managers or senior executives hold the major sources of information, in previous style, they are the only person who can make decisions. And their sub-ordinates have no role to play their, as they don't have any access to those information sources. With the help of those information, senior managers made all important decision and their sub-ordinates just follow those and execute. The sub-ordinates had no option to made any decision, they need to wait for their bosses response.
But the situation is changed totally. The front-line executives have their access to many information, all thanks goes to Internet, they are now able to made their decision and they need less direction than previous time. They become more comfortable with their regular jobs, they can manage their activity plan based on the priority and their superiors need to help them in situations where they ask their support. In other word, managers become converted into coaches who need to coach his team.
We can think our present managers like Morinho or Sir Alex Furgusen, the two top manager of present football world. They all manage two teams, full of talented players. So, what they do? Do they teach them something new? Do they just instruct them what do do and how to do? Perhaps that's not the scenario. To my understanding, they need to play the role of coaches in a way, where they assist the player to achieve their success rather just instruct them.
So, whats now? The managers need to play the role of coaches rather then their previous role. They need to share their knowledge and experience to shape their team members, so that the team members can perform their activities more efficiently. You observe any change in my wording. I am using team player instead of sub-ordinates. This is another change. Bosses need to create the team environment with their sub-ordinates where everybody need to do some contribution to achieve the ultimate success. The manager, previously, the superiors, need to motivate their team, ensure the presence of positive tone in their team as all these ultimately lead to the achievement of the success.
